The Art of Modern Jazz
Rooted in Halifax’s vibrant jazz community, the Leo Cox Trio brings a groove-forward sound shaped by a new generation.
Featuring Leo Cox on bass, Ben Tucker on guitar, and Dante Kierstead on drums, the trio mixes tight musicianship with the open, anything-can-happen energy of today’s jazz. Their sets move fluidly from post-bop to funk and cinematic fusion — always grounded in feel and driven by instinct.
Their weekly Tuesday Night Jazz residency at The Economy Shoe Shop has become a downtown staple, known for evolving sets, originals, and spontaneous sit-ins with local artists.

The Players
Leo Cox - Bass
Known for his deep tone and instinctive groove, Leo anchors the trio with both warmth and drive.
A graduate of the NSCC Music Arts Program and student of Jamie Gatti, he’s an emerging voice in Atlantic Canada’s jazz scene. Leo is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Music at Dalhousie University.
Beyond LC3, Leo performs regularly with Maggie Andrews, Esdaile, and In The Breaks, contributing to projects that bridge modern jazz, pop, and creative improvisation.
Ben Tucker - Guitar
Ben adds colour and shape to the trio’s sound, mixing lyrical phrasing with sharp rhythmic sense.
A graduate of the NSCC Music Arts Program and student of Geordie Haley, his playing moves easily between traditional and modern jazz influences — always guided by melody and feel.
Outside LC3, Ben plays with Ashley MacIsaac, idialedyournumber, and a range of local projects that show his adaptability across genres and his growing voice in Halifax’s creative scene.
Dante Kierstead - Drums
An award-winning drummer with explosive range, Dante brings both drive and finesse to the trio.
A graduate of the NSCC Music Arts Program and student of Dave Burton, he’s been recognized with numerous honours across jazz and contemporary performance. Dante is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Music at Dalhousie University.
Beyond LC3, Dante plays with Hobo Aquarium, idialedyournumber, Noel Morgan & The Salty Groove, and other collaborative projects that highlight his versatility and creative edge.
